Ze Network - The second best K.I.T.T. series without my K.I.T.T.
In April 2021, I received a request to shoot the 8-part series "
Ze Network
" with David Hasselhoff. My own K.I.T.T. in a new TV series with "Michael Knight" himself? That's impossible to turn down! - Well, I did it anyway... 🙈
At least 11 days of filming were already planned at the time. In Germany, Poland and other countries. In addition, there are numerous other days for arrival and departure. Apart from the fact that I would have had to spend a large part of my annual leave on it (I work full-time), it simply wouldn't have been possible for me as a family man - and I don't want to drive hundreds of kilometers through half of Europe in my car either... In the end, you have to be realistic, even if the offer sounded tempting at first glance...
As a worthy “replacement”, I referred the team to my friend Martin Busker from Berlin, who had already accompanied Hasselhoff on his 2018 concert tour with his K.I.T.T. in Germany. He was a freelancer and therefore much more flexible in terms of time, has a very nice K.I.T.T., works in the film business himself and even lived in the same street where the office of the production company Syrreal Entertainment was located at the time. It could hardly have been better 😉
Later, he even took his car all the way to Morocco in North-West Africa for the shoot, which was an absolute adventure! I wouldn't have done that myself under any circumstances. And unfortunately, the filming didn't leave his vehicle unscathed, but left behind various visible damages, which Martin coped with much better than I would have done in his place thanks to compensation from the insurance company - which is why I have never regretted my decision to this day...
Filming with K.I.T.T. took place between 30th August and 6th November 2021 and took Martin to Poland, Görlitz, Halle/Saale, Leipzig and finally to Morocco. During filming, I was in regular contact with him. He told me daily about his experiences on and around the set. It was already apparent at the time that I couldn't have imagined a better "replacement".
Ze Network - Now on Blu-ray!
The series started on 1st November 2022 exclusively on RTL+ in Germany. However, I didn't watch it in its entirety myself at the time, but only skipped through the scenes with K.I.T.T. during the test period to see how well the car was staged. The rest of the plot didn't really interest me back then, which is why I never watched the series in its entirety... Apart from that, it unfortunately never really found a large audience, which was certainly mainly due to the fact that it was only available for a fee on RTL+ and was never broadcast on normal television.
In December 2023, Turbine Medien, who I was already allowed to actively support with their fantastic German release of
"Knight Rider" on Blu-ray
, asked me what I personally thought of "Ze Network" and in February 2024 they decided to release the series on Blu-ray. Of course, the production company Syrreal Entertainment was on board, who were able to provide a lot of additional information, so I wasn't involved any further here - I really wouldn't have been able to contribute much due to my lack of participation...
Nevertheless, I offered to give my "two cents" from a fan's point of view on the artwork, content and technical implementation as soon as the first results were available. I received the cover artwork in August 2024, when it became clear that there would be 5 different limited edition mediabooks. These are small books with 24 pages and 2 Blu-ray discs each with the series and the bonus material. The covers are designed differently so that everyone can choose their favorite motif.
In November 2024, I received Disc 1 and shortly afterwards Disc 2 of the series to "check" - i.e. to look through the whole series and see if there were any errors. I was actually able to report a few minor ones. This was also my first time watching the complete series and I was actually pleasantly surprised. Not only did Hasselhoff cut an unexpectedly good figure despite his obvious ageing and barely concealed knee injury, but the other characters also made the series an entertaining and exciting mystery thriller!
I was able to watch the 8 episodes in two evenings - first in English, then in German. The new German dubbing voices of David and K.I.T.T. on RTL+ also bothered me a little at the time - as the original German voice actors had already passed away, they resorted to Ronald Nitschke and Peter Flechtner.
Nitschke is best known as the German voice of Tommy Lee Jones. However, he actually also voiced David Hasselhoff in 1989 in "Witchcraft" and in 2015-2016 in "Hoff the Record". When you consider that Hasselhoff is now over 70 years old and no longer 30 as in "Knight Rider", the voice is actually not a bad fit. Compared to Andreas von der Meden's voice, however, it still sounds unfamiliar to German fans at first.
Peter Flechtner voiced the Knight 3000 in the German version of "Knight Rider" (2008) and was a good match for the Ford Mustang and the English voice of Val Kilmer. As the voice of the Knight 2000 in the form of the Pontiac Firebird from the 80s, however, his voice is very different to the familiar German voice of Gottfried Kramer. In "Ze Network", however, K.I.T.T. only speaks in a short dream sequence. In the original English version of the series, his voice is actually very close to William Daniels, even though Wesley Martin was used for reasons of cost and effort, who has also lent his voice to K.I.T.T. in various US commercials and comes very close to Daniels' original voice, who is now 95 years old and no longer sounds quite the same as he did 40 years ago.
Personally, I actually liked the series best in English, even though I prefer German dubbing versions almost without exception. The forced change of the German voices makes it a little unfamiliar - but it's not bad either. Most of the actors have spoken themselves in both versions. Most of the series was shot in English - only the second lead Henry Hübchen was allowed to speak German in almost all takes and then dubbed himself in English.
This and much more background information is provided in the audio commentary on the complete series by screenwriter, showrunner and cameraman Christian Alvart and screenwriter Arend Remmers, which I also listened to for all 8 episodes. There are also various interesting interviews in the bonus material.
All in all, I could almost be a bit annoyed that I didn't accompany the filming with my K.I.T.T. myself... but then I remember the considerable damage Martin's replica sustained during the shoot and the immense effort he put into it... then I'm fine again 😉
Nevertheless, a great legacy for Martin and his K.I.T.T. - the plot of the series was surprisingly good and exciting. There certainly won't be another "Michael Knight and K.I.T.T." feeling with David Hasselhoff outside of "Knight Rider". I was a little sad that I hadn't watched the whole series beforehand. The finale of the first episode alone was so surprising that I didn't even begin to expect it. I don't want to spoil anything here, but it at least explains why cover E of the mediabooks looks so unusually "splattery", which wouldn't normally be my cup of tea, but fits extremely well here 😉
Immediately before the start of the pre-sale, it was noticed that cover C unfortunately had an spelling error on David Hasselhoff's name. The sale of cover C was therefore cancelled and the pre-sale started with only 4 of 5 motifs. Shit happens.
All 4 Mediabooks are now available in the Turbine-Shop! The discs are code free and contain German and English audio!
Unboxing-Video
4 of the 5 Mediabooks were officially announced by Turbine on 20th January 2025 and could also be pre-ordered directly in the
Turbine Shop
. Unfortunately, a mistake was found on cover C shortly before the announcement, so it will not go on sale.
I personally received my 5 sets on 17th January 2025 and was therefore able to create an exclusive unboxing video in advance, which was also published on 20th January 2025. I also took the following photos:
Technical details of the Blu-rays
Plot: David Hasselhoff is tired of being cast for the same roles and cameos over and over again. When he receives an offer to play a role in an English-language theater in East Berlin, he accepts. It soon turns out that the theater is not in East Berlin, but east of Berlin in Görlitz. There he meets Henry Hübchen and gets caught up in a conspiracy involving former Cold War assassins, in which only the star of "Knight Rider" can help...
